Skeletons

The fabulously macabre hall of bones, near the main entrance, has an intriguingly bizarre tableau of a skeletal man riding a horse. On the other wall, Skeletor sits in a comfy chair with his underfed dog and a bird in a cage, while his cat chases a rat. Another bony bro has been made to look like it’s riding a bicycle.

Minerals

In neighbouring halls on the first level, the Planet of Minerals and the Chapman Mineral Collection house a fascinating array of colourful, glittering and implausibly shaped things that have been dug out of the earth and collected from caves. Check out the giant casts of actual gold nuggets found in Australia.

Top Tips

› Special temporary exhibitions are held regularly and are charged separately.

› You can leave and re-enter the museum; pop out for a picnic in Hyde Park.

› Children under five get in for free.

› Kidspace on level two is a mini-museum for the under-fives.

Take a Break

Just down the hill from the museum, Bar Reggio ( , C1; 9332 1129; www.barreggio.com.au; 135 Crown St; mains $12-25; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat; Museum) is a remnant of a tiny Italian enclave centred on Stanley St. Its pasta, pizza and grills have stood the test of time.

The museum has its own cafe, located on the ground floor near the entrance.
